Pleural fluid is a fluid from the pleural space between the lungs and the thoracic box. The pleural space is normally only a small amount of liquid. The excess accumulation of pleural fluid can be caused by many conditions such as infections, inflammations, heart disease or cancer. The presence of a large amount of fluid can cause the patient breathing problems. The presence of the excess pleural fluid may be discovered during a regular examination and can then be confirmed by a thoracic X-ray.
