Jaundice is the yellow colouring of the skin, mucous membranes and whites of the eyes (sclera). Jaundice is determined by increased levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow colored pigment that is produced by destroying red blood cells (erythrocytes or red blood cells). Normally bilirubin is metabolised by the liver and eliminated through the bile in the digestive tract and then through the fecal matter on the outside.
