The child grows and develops in the womb in an amniotic sac containing amniotic fluid, a transparent and completely sterile liquid. Amniotic fluid plays a very important role in the evolution of pregnancy, excess or lack of a sufficient amount of amniotic fluid, representing a risk for both the mother and the child.
Since the first weeks of pregnancy, the amniotic cavity is filled with amniotic fluid. The volume of amniotic fluid increases with the growth of the fetus, reaching a maximum amount around week 34 of pregnancy, after which gradually reduces to near birth. Normally, the amniotic cavity is found between 500 and 1000 ml of amniotic fluid. The baby swallows this liquid that reaches the stomach and the digestive tract, is absorbed into the fetal circulation and then passes through the kidneys, from where it is ejected through the urine and thus recirculates.
