To understand Ards, you need to know how your lungs work. When breathing, the air passes through the nose, mouth, trachea and then to the lungs (bags with air). The bags sa walls are draineded by small blood vessels called capillaries. Oxygen travels through the capillaries of the lung and then into the bloodstream. Blood transports oxygen to all parts of the body, including its organs. In Ards, infections, lesions or other conditions cause leakage of pulmonary capillaries into air bags, of a larger amount of fluid than normal. This prevents the lungs from being filled with air and carrying enough oxygen into the circulatory system. When this happens the organs of the body do not receive the necessary oxygen, and without oxygen, they cannot function properly or function incompletely. Most people who develop Ards are already hospitalized.
