The risk of congenital infection varies according to studies up to 15% and is correlated with the presence of group-B streptococcus in urine.

It was observed that in the case of pregnant women with Bacteriuria of group-B Streptococcus there is a higher risk, compared to those without bacteriuria, of premature childbirth (15.3% vs 7.9%) or premature membrane rupture (10.7 vs 7.9). In addition, there is a higher risk of intrauterine growth restriction syndrome and abortion.

From a batch of 500 women and their newborn infants, group-B Streptococcus was isolated in 46 women and in 8 newborns. The maternal colonization was 9.2% and the fetal one of 1.6%. The vertical transmission rate was 15.2%

Over a period of 3 years, in a hospital in Melbourne, the incidence of group-B strep. infection was 2 per 1000 births. Symptomatology ranged from fulminant sepsis to asymptomatic bacteraemia.

A number of 14 pregnant women presenting Bacteriuria with group-B Strep. were followed until birth and at 2 the fetal death of the fetus was recorded, and a newborn had sepsis with group-B Strep.
