Antibiotics are the main treatment of bacterial infections, their target being bacteria killing, without host affecting. To determine what type of antibiotic is susceptible to a certain bacterium, it is necessary to make serotyping (in order to avoid increasing the resistance of pathogenic agents to antibiotics). Each class of antibiotics is targeted at a specific bacterial process: some of them inhibit the formation of bacterial cells (penicillin), or interrupt protein synthesis (erythromycin, tetracycline), and others inhibit bacterial metabolism (sulphonamides) or interfere with DNA synthesis (ciprofloxacin) and/or permeability of the cell membrane.
Through investigations, consultation, and other examinations, your doctor can determine whether a disease is bacterial / viral and treats it correctly.
